Mobilization, Leadership, and Coalition Building (FSI 2010)
Dr. Janet Cherry
Senior Lecturer in Development Studies
Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University
Three critical phases in the work of most nonviolent movements—mobilization, leadership, and coalition building—are examined in this session, with examples like South Africa’s with the United Democratic Front. Dr. Cherry illustrates the trajectory of organizing and building a diverse, representative mass movement; the way in which broad unity with a range of allies is constructed; and the nature of leadership. This session took place at the 2010 Fletcher Summer Institute for the Advanced Study of Nonviolent Conflict.
